Georgina Ingham of reads_eats_explores had this to say about the original novella...
St George's Day is an unusual read, a short novella set in a supermarket; yes, you read that right, a supermarket. This supermarket is the workplace of our protagonist, a workshy, lanky, laconic young fella who goes by the nickname of Sideways.
"Many of my friends and colleagues call me Sideways on account of my rarely being upright in posture. I might have only turned twenty-two a few months ago, but I am already looking forward to my retirement."
Sideways is far more concerned with avoiding the mundane work ascribed to him in the store and would rather rest; ostensibly, he claims that while he rests, he is working spiritually through meditation and imagination, which is actually challenging work indeed. Of course, his rather mouthy store manager and some colleagues see the situation very differently.
Sheridan, who describes himself as devout Joycean, follows the Ulyssean lead and sets the novella over a single shift. It's not just the time frame that brings James Joyce to mind, though; it's Sheridan’s astute use of language and prosaic forming of the novella.
The story is set in the author's hometown of Maynooth and is reportedly loosely based on Sheridan’s experiences working in a supermarket.
St George's Day is a fast-paced, humorous and quirky quick read. I certainly want to read more from this talented author.
