We would like to thank everyone who donated - without you, this project would simply not exist. Below is a message from the keeper of Pat's poems, Vivienne Baillie...

When Luain Press asked if they could produce a spoken word album with Pat’s poems, my immediate answer was ‘yes’. I knew Pat would have been thrilled. He had had a long and multi-faceted career as a DJ, playwright, newspaper columnist and creator of hugely popular children’s TV shows – but he never stopped writing poems. For many years, too, he performed them in acclaimed solo shows across Ireland. Poems were like a heartbeat for him. They were what kept him alive, what really rung true. So much so that, in his early fifties, he turned his back on celebrity to dedicate the rest of his life to poetry. For twenty years, he sold his books on the streets of Dublin, exchanging with people from all walks of life and every part of the world. It was among the happiest times of his life.

Pat remained young at heart and was always keen to discover the next generation of poets and their work. To know that a selection of his poems are now part of an album and read by some of Ireland’s finest contemporary spoken word artists would have blown him away. He couldn’t have asked for more. He was worried his poems wouldn’t survive him. Anxious that without him here, his poems would stop living too.

Luain Press has made an album Pat would have been very proud of because they are his poems read by a younger generation of poets. The selection is wonderful and forms a lyrical account of Pat’s life, from the time he caught polio as an infant to his days selling on the street. It is all brought to life in unexpected and delightful ways thanks to each artist, naturally, but also to composer Philip May whose music succeeds in bringing deeper meaning to Pat’s words and memory.

Luain Press is quite remarkable - a shining light in the sometimes bewildering and labyrinthine world of poetry publishing, bringing new voices to receptive audiences and supporting authors every step of the way - if this is punk publishing the world needs to be more punk - seize the day!
